DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kyle Busch was expected to remain overnight Sunday at Halifax Health Medical Center, recovering from surgery on the compound fracture in his right leg from his Xfinity Series crash on Saturday.

A Joe Gibbs Racing spokesman said there was no release set for the driver, who slammed into a cement wall unprotected by a SAFER barrier during Saturday’s season opener at Daytona International Speedway. Team owner Joe Gibbs said Sunday morning before the Daytona 500 that the team would keep a plane on standby to return Busch to his home in North Carolina.

“Whenever he feels that he can travel, we’ll get him back to Charlotte,” Gibbs said.

According to his wife’s Twitter feed, Busch watched the 57th running of The Great American Race from his hospital bed, a few blocks away from the track.

After the victory by Joey Logano, Busch remained on the mind of several drivers.

“I’m definitely thinking about Kyle (Busch) in the hospital,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said after finishing third. “I hope he gets well. We’ve been pretty tough competitors and haven’t always gotten along. But you hate seeing any of your comrades go through that. We hope he’s doing OK.”
