NASCAR issues additional instructions in driver/crew chief meeting

HAMPTON, Ga. - NASCAR reminded teams during Sunday’s driver/crew chief meeting of new rules this season, announced a competition caution and stated that teams could have an extra set of tires for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The competition caution will be Lap 25. NASCAR will have it because morning rain washed rubber off the track.

The extra set of tires means teams can have up to 13 sets for today’s race.

Richard Buck, Sprint Cup series director, reminded teams Sunday morning that they are not allowed to make unapproved adjustments to the car during the race, such as flaring side skirts or pushing in the side of the car.

“We will use all available resources … to police this today,’’ Buck told competitors.

Buck also said that all cars will be parked on pit road after the race. That’s to allow NASCAR to retrieve the tapered spacer from each car. Buck also said that only two crew members per team will be allowed with the on pit road.

“I want to stress this, two crew members to help the driver out,’’ Buck said in the meeting. “Once the driver gets out, then the crews will be instructed on what they need to do.’’

By reducing the number of crew members around the car, it can also reduce the chances of a scuffle among teams such as what happened at Texas last fall among crews of Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski.
