Jimmie Johnson Foundation spearheads effort to recognize groups that support education

Continuing a tradition that began in 2008, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation again is spearheading the 2015 Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope campaign for education.

Nonprofit organizations that support education from kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to compete for five $25,000 grants.

“Last year, the semifinalist organizations did an incredible job of mobilizing their networks to vote,” Johnson said in a statement released Tuesday. “Chandra (wife) and I can’t wait to see how this year’s semifinalists utilize their social media platforms to highlight the important work they are doing in support of K-12 public education.

“It’s an exciting opportunity, and we encourage everyone to nominate and then vote. Let’s have some fun for a good cause.”

Since its inception, the program has raised nearly $700,000 that has been distributed to more than 75 charities.

Fans and consumers can nominate their favorite education-focused charities, including PTA groups, for one of the $25,000 grants.

More information can be found at www.helmetofhope.org. Nominations will be accepted through April 1.

Ten semifinalists will be chosen. A public vote from April 9-17 will select the five grant winners.

To commemorate the winners, Johnson will wear a special Blue Bunny helmet for the June 7 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.
