After an impressive eighth in his first Sprint Cup start of the season, Brett Moffitt will be back in NASCAR’s premier series this weekend.

Moffitt, 22, will drive the No. 34 Ford for Front Row Motorsports this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, taking over the ride normally belonging to David Ragan (who is subbing for injured Kyle Busch in the No. 18 Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing). Moffitt also will be behind the wheel of the Fusion for the races at Phoenix International Raceway and Auto Club Speedway.

Moffitt posted the first top 10 of his career in his eighth Cup start Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway while substituting for Brian Vickers in Michael Waltrip Racing’s No. 55 Toyota. Vickers returns to that ride this weekend.

Moffitt is under a multiyear contract to MWR but had no further races scheduled, and the team said in a Monday release that it diligently was working to keep him in a car.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to run some races for Front Row,” Moffitt said in a release. “After last weekend, I’m obviously easger to get back into a car and keep racing. I’m grateful to (Front Row owner) Bob Jenkins and his team for giving me the chance to do that. I’ll do my best to get some good finishes for them. I’m also thankful that Michael Waltrip Racing is allowing me to pursue this opporutnity. I think it’s going to benefit everyone in the end.”

In the release, Jenkins said Moffitt would be a valuable addition.

“We know Brett doesn’t have a ton of Sprint Cup experience, but he’s got a lot of hours behind the wheel in testing time, and he was certainly impressive Sunday in Atlanta,” Jenkins said. “For only his eighth start, he showed a lot of poise, patience and maturity that you don’t often see in drivers that age.”

The deal to put Moffitt in the car was approved by Ford and Toyota as well as MWR, which was supportive of keeping him in a car while it hunts for sponsorship to field its own ride.

“As we anticipated, there has been heightened interest for Brett Mofffit’s services after Atlanta,” team co-owner Rob Kauffman said in a release. “While he is committed to MWR, we are happy for him to gain further valuable experience and help Front Row Motorsports.”
