Logano keeps his need for speed going with outside pole at Las Vegas

Joey Logano’s need for speed continued during Friday’s Sprint Cup qualifying at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After earning the pole last week at Atlanta, the Daytona 500 winner came back to earn the No. 2 starting spot for Sunday’s Kobalt 400.

“We have been able to keep the speed here for the last couple of weeks,” Logano said.

Jeff Gordon, who also won the pole at Daytona, earned the pole for Sunday’s race with a speed of 194.679 mph. Logano ran 194.315 mph.

“We got really close, I was definitely not lifting much out there,” Logano said. “Jeff definitely picked it up and had a really good lap there and we weren’t able to beat that one.”

Still, Logano – who leads the Cup point standings – was pleased with his effort.

“We will have a good starting spot and a good pit stall, and we will be able to hopefully lead some laps and hopefully win the race,” he said. “We got the pole here last year and didn’t win, so maybe this is a good thing. Who knows?”

Even with one win that has all but guaranteed him a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Logano isn’t about to go easy in Sunday’s race.

“We don’t have much to lose at all,” Logano said. “We can go out there and race hard and race aggressive.

“We can take those gambles because the risk of a 20th-place finish isn’t as big a penalty as it would have been. We can race for wins and try to get some trophies while we are out there having fun.”
