Darlington Raceway’s “The Tradition Returns” – the return to its annual Labor Day weekend race – has resulted in at least one team getting into the retro groove.

Stewart-Haas Racing announced Wednesday that reigning Sprint Cup champion and defending Darlington race winner Kevin Harvick will have an old school paint scheme on his No. 4 Budweiser/Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS for that race.

Instead of his usual red, white and black, Harvick will drive a gold-and-black paint scheme during the Sept. 4-6 Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend.

Here’s how a media release described the look:

“The retro-themed, commemorative paint scheme mimics the first can Budweiser produced, which was gold and featured an eagle flying through the Anheuser-Busch stylized ‘A’ with five stars above and below the winged crest. Below the eagle, Budweiser is spelled out in block letters with ‘Lager Beer’ in script.”

Darlington Raceway was built in 1949 by founder Harold Brasington, and has hosted Sprint Cup races since 1950.

“It’s great that Darlington is embracing its rich tradition with the Southern 500’s return to Labor Day weekend,” Harvick said in a media release. “Budweiser saw this as an excellent opportunity to celebrate its own history by racing the colors and design from the first can Budweiser ever made.

Harvick’s car isn’t the only one in the SHR stable that will have unique paint schemes for the return to Darlington. The team also announced that other SHR drivers will have similar retro cars whose designs will be revealed later.
